Trail Bids Opened

Tunnel Work To Begin Soon

FAYETTEVILLE — The city’s Purchasing Division on Tuesday opened five bids for a half-mile extension to the Frisco Trail.

The $1.4 million low bid came from Boulder Construction of Fayetteville. The company is the lead contractor for the Clear Creek Trail, a joint project under way in Fayetteville and Johnson.

City officials last year estimated Frisco Trail construction at $1.2 million. The project will be paid for using a grant from the Walton Family Foundation as part of the 36-mile Razorback Regional Greenway connecting north Bentonville to south Fayetteville.

Matt Mihalevich, trails coordinator, said he expects City Council members to award a contract July 16 with work beginning on or before Aug. 1.

Mihalevich said workers will have a short window to complete the tunnel before the University of Arkansas football season begins. The Razorbacks’ first home game is Aug. 31.

Extending the Frisco Trail will connect Walker Park to the 7.6-mile “backbone” of the city’s trail system.

A roughly 100-foot-long tunnel will be built under Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from where the Frisco Trail ends west of School Avenue to a spot next to the Farmers Cooperative building. The trail will pass The Grove apartments before crossing over South School Avenue near Ninth Street. It’s planned to eventually tie into the Tsa La Gi Trail and the Town Branch Trail.
