The Fort Smith National Historic Site will present a mock trial based on the 1890 case United States v. William Alexander on Friday and Saturday. Night court sessions begin at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday in the historic courtroom at the site.

Alexander and David Steadman traveled together from Arizona to Oklahoma City in 1889 in the hopes of selling horses. After their plan to make money failed, the two men stopped in Choska, Indian Territory, looking for a place to stay during the winter.

Steadman went missing after a hunting trip with Alexander 10 days into their stay at Choska. A week later, Steadman’s remains were found, and Alexander became the prime suspect.

Alexander was brought to Judge Isaac C. Parker’s court to face trial on murder charges the next year.

Admission is $5; reservations are required. More information is available by calling (479) 783-3961.
