Eureka Springs picks school head

A former Springdale High School principal will take over as superintendent of the Eureka Springs School District on July 1.

Eureka Springs School Board President Albert Larson said the board chose David Kellogg, superintendent of Cossatot River School District, to succeed Curtis Turner, who had served as the Eureka Springs superintendent since January 2012.

State Commissioner of Education Tom Kimbrell tapped Turner to be superintendent of Mineral Springs School District last month after the Arkansas Department of Education took control of the financially troubled district in Howard County.

The search for a new superintendent of Eureka Springs drew 11 applicants, including six candidates with prior experience as superintendent.

Kellogg spent 23 years in the role of principal in the El Dorado, Pulaski County and Springdale districts. His resume showed that he had responsibilities as assistant principal and principal of Springdale High School from 2001 to 2010, Larson said. Kellogg has spent the past two years as superintendent of the Cossatot River district in Polk County.

“We liked his experience,” Larson said. “He seems up to the challenge. Somebody who’s been around education for a long time and has experience in large schools is going to manage our school district handily.”

Kellogg will earn an annual salary of $94,000 under a threeyear contract, Larson said.
