Shooting Sends Man to Hospital

SPRINGDALE — A call about a possible gang fight Thursday night ended with one man wounded by gunfire and another in custody, police said.

Norman Centeno, 29, of 610 Linda Ave. in Springdale, was taken to Northwest Medical Center-Springdale with a gunshot wound to his leg and a laceration on his head, according to a police news release.

Police arrested Brian Osornto Vital, 22, of 8670 W. Goose Creek Road in Fayetteville, in connection with felony aggravated assault and first-degree battery. Vital was scheduled to be transferred to the Washington County Detention Center on Friday to await a bond hearing.

Police received a 911 call at 9:03 p.m. Thursday reporting several people in Murphy Park were about to fight, according to police dispatch records. When officers arrived, all but a few had left. One witness said one of the men suggested going to Luther George Grove Street Park to fight, according to records.

Officers started toward Grove Street Park, but a call came in at 9:35 p.m. saying shots had been fired on Linda Street. Grove Street Park is about five blocks from Linda Street.

A call also was received reporting a man with a gun threatened people as he ran through the backyard at 604 Savage St., according to police. Savage runs parallel to Linda Street.

Police found Vital hiding in a garage at 602 Savage St. A .357-caliber handgun was found nearby, hidden with clothes in a laundry basket.

Centeno was found wounded outside his home, according to the news release. His condition wasn't available on Friday.
