Mamie Ogle marks 100

Mamie Ogle, a resident of Fayetteville Health and Rehab, celebrated her100th birthday May 31 at the rehab center.

Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan attended the celebration and read a proclamation designating the day as Mamie Ogle Day.

The staff at the rehab center held a small party and buffet for friends and family. Ogle received cards from President Barack Obama, Gov. Mike Beebe and Mayor Jordan.

Morriss commands

93rd Bomb Squad

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. James L. Morriss III (Trey) has assumed command of the 93rd Bomb Squadron at Barksdale Air Force Base, La.

Morriss is a B-52H Stratofortress electronic warfare officer and was previously the 307thOperations Group vice commander.

He is the son of Jim Morriss of Fayetteville and the late Jan C.

Morriss.

A native of Springdale and graduate of Springdale High School, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas in 1985 and received his commission from the Officers Training School in April 1986.

He spent 12 years on active duty and joined the Air Force Reserve in 1999. He earned his master of arts, military studies-joint warfare from American Public University this year. Morriss is a master navigator with more than 4,300 flight hours in the B-52G/H, T-37 and T-43.

He officially assumed command of the 93rd during a ceremony April 28 at Barksdale.

Brandon Smith assisted Lt. Col.

Morriss in unveiling his name on a B-52 that is the flagship of the 93rd. Smith is crew chief for the aircraft.

Morriss, who is currently a full-time reservist, resides in Maumelle with his family.

Draper selected for West Point

Logan Draper, a University of Arkansas freshman, has received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., as a member of the class of 2017.

Draper is a 2012 graduate of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts in Hot Springs.

Prior to attending the school, he was a student at Farmington High School.

Draper earned the rank of Eagle Scout as part of Boy Scout Troop 555 in Farmington and won first place in environmental science category at the Arkansas State Science and Engineering Fair. He plans to major in environmental engineering at West Point.

RHS Class of ‘73 plans for reunion

The Rogers High School class of 1973 will hold a planning meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Atlanta Bread Co. in Rogers.

Participants will discuss activities for the 40th class reunion.

Rogers teens attend

Governor’s School

Twelve students from the Rogers School District have been chosen to attend the 2013 Arkansas Governor’s School. The six week program allows students to study science, social studies, math, music, art and English with kids from around the state.

Alex Olsen and Adrienne Pierce were selected from Rogers Heritage High School. Olsen will study social studies, and Pierce will focus on choral music.

Students chosen from Rogers High School are Shelby Benefield for social studies; Brandon Elder for drama; Demra Hubbs for math; Meredith Kressen for social studies; Tori Metheny for science; Olivia Paschal for social studies; Steve Patrick for math; Morgan Stephens for choral music;

Sydney Witt for instrumental music; and Chasity Wright for English.

Nelson wins Best in Show

Bentonville artist Erika Nelson received the Best in Showaward at the Fayetteville Underground Gallery’s inaugural Women Take Flight juried show.

The national show focused on portraits of iconic female figures and female figures submerged or airborne.

Nelson received a $1,000 award for her winning entry, “Fibers of Her Vision of Flight.” The painting sold for $1,200 at the show.

The show drew 58 entries, 24 of which were selected for the exhibit.

Duncan named War Eagle Steward

Ron Duncan of Springdale, a commissioner with the Arkansas Game and FishCommission, received the annual War Eagle Steward Award during War Eagle Appreciation Day at Withrow Springs State Park near Huntsville.

Duncan was honored for his lifelong dedication to the War Eagle River.

War Eagle Mill also received a War Eagle Steward Award for its longtime commitment to the river. Liz Kapsner and Jennifer Keefe from the mill were on hand to receive the award.

Award winners receive a metal sign bearing the War Eagle logo and identifying the recipient as a War Eagle Creek Steward.

Duncan founded the Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs program in 1982 at Central Junior High School in Springdale, where he taught civics.

Berryville student earns scholarship

Clare Doss of Berryville is the recipient of the 2013 Pringle Scholarship from the Arkansas Community Foundation. The scholarship is awarded annually to a member of one of the foundation’s Youth Advisory Councils.

Doss is the daughter of Barry and Connie Doss. She was home-schooled and graduated with a grade point average of 3.98.

She joined the Carroll County Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council in eighth grade and participated throughout high school.

Doss is the second Carroll County member in a row to win the Pringle Scholarship. Byron Thomas, a graduate of Eureka Springs High School, received the award in 2012.

Bentonville schools win Gold Medallion

The communications department at Bentonville Public Schools won a 2013 National School Public Relations Association Gold Medallion Award for Trail Time.

Judges from the group selected three winners from a field of 66 school public relations programs in the United States and Canada.

The department will receive the award July 10 at the National School Public Relations Association seminar in San Diego.

UA names Honors College Fellows

The University of Arkansas in Fayetteville announced its 2013 Honors College Fellows on June 11.

This year’s class includes 63 students chosen from a field of more than 500 applicants.

Twenty-five students from Northwest Arkansas were selected for the honor, which carries a $50,000 award for tuition, books, room and board and registration over the next four years. Students must score at least a 32 on the ACT and have a 3.8 grade-point average to apply.

Fellows from Benton County are Julianne Clements from Bentonville High School; Justin Davis from Rogers Heritage High School; Jacob Harris from Bentonville High School;

McKayla Holmes of Bella Vista, a Bentonville High School graduate; Indran Kamalanathan from Bentonville High School; Isaac Robson from Bentonville High School; Abby Terlouw from Bentonville High School; and Jason Townsley from Rogers Heritage High School.

Fellows from Washington County are Khusbu Bhikhabhai from Fayetteville High School; Adam Ferrier from Fayetteville High School; Andrea Kathol from Fayetteville High School; Jonathan Main from Fayetteville High School;

Larissa Markwardt of Fayetteville, who attended the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts; Hannah Pinter from Fayetteville High School;

Maria Rossetti from Fayetteville High School; Christine Tan from Fayetteville High School; and Alexander Wolf, a homeschool student from Fayetteville.

Fellows from Crawford and Sebastian counties are Michael Dasso from Van Buren High School; Madison Martinez from Southside High School in Fort Smith; Jessica Montgomery of Van Buren, who attended Fort Smith’s Northside High School; Alan Pinter from Fort Smith Southside High School; and Wesley Wells from Charleston High School

Wilson Guillory of Eureka Springs, who attended the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts, is the lone Fellow from Carroll County. B.J.

Osterberger of Harrison, who also attended the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts, is the only student from Boone County.

Hanna Curtis of Booneville, who studied at J.D.

Leftwich High School in Magazine, is the sole student from Logan County.

This year’s class is the 12th class of Honors College Fellows.
