Overpowering front line propels West

CONWAY - The East had little or no answer for the West front line trio of Audrey Edie, Maggie Hughes and Haley Owen.

That group led the West to victories in three games and a 3-2 victory over the East in the Arkansas High School Coaches Association All-Star volleyball game at the Farris Center on Wednesday night.

The West won the match25-22, 22-25, 25-11, 19-25, 15-9.

“I just think we had too much of a tall front line for them,” said Owen, who was named the game’s most valuable player. “We are all going to college somewhere to play, so we had some ability.”

Owen, of Paris, is headed to Arkansas Tech. She had a game-high 14 kills and seven assists.

Fayetteville’s 6-1 Edie, who is headed to Ole Miss, had 26 assists, 6 kills, 4 digs and 3 blocks. She was named the West’s most outstanding player.

“We all just wanted to come out here and have fun and win,” said Owen, who had two big kills to turn around the final game after the East jumped to a 2-0 lead. “I did not expect to win the MVP. I just wanted us to win the game.”

Little Rock Christian’s Markie Schaedig, an Arkansas State signee, earned the East’s outstanding player award. She finished with 11 kills and 18 digs.

Owen led the way with eight kills in the first match, including the one that won the match. Mikayla Avery had five kills. Schaedig led the East with five kills and six digs.

The East evened things in Game 2 with its 25-22 victory. Jayme Shell of Batesville and Peyton Hamilton of Fort Smith Southside led the way with four kills each. For the West, Alyssa Stanfill of Lake Hamilton had three kills.

In Game 3, the West, behind the dominating front line of Avery, Owen and Edie, rolled 25-11. Edie had four kills and Owen three more.

Schaedig filled in and helped the East to victory in Game 4 to even the match.

Game 5 belonged to the West. Owen had three more kills and Avery had a pair to lead the way.
