LITTLE FLOCK - There are new co-leaders after two rounds in the boys division of the KPMG Stacy Lewis Junior Open at the Lost Springs Golf and Athletic Club.
Griffin Pierce of Edmond, Okla., and Evan Shartzer of Overland Park, Kan., each shot a 1-under par 71 to share the 36-hole lead at 1-under 143. Pierce and Shartzer jumped over Jordan Griffith of Madison, Ind., and Ethan Smith of Oklahoma City, who followed 2-under opening rounds of 70 with 5-over 77s and are tied at 3-over 147, four shots back.
The final round will be held today.
“I hit the ball all right, but my putting really saved me,” said Pierce, who finished with a par on the 18th hole. “I need to hit a little better and keep up my putting to have a chance at the win.”
The shot of the day came on the par-3, 200-yard No. 11, where Preston Crawford of Tulsa made a hole-in-one. He is at 1-over 145 after shooting 74 on Wednesday.
“Every hole-in-one is a great shot and that’s pretty impressive for a kid,” said Todd Pinneo, the director of golf at Lost Springs. “If you miss that shot 10-15 feet right, you’re probably going down into the water.”
Fisher Vollendorf and Mason Adams, both from Fayetteville, remain in the top third of the field after two rounds. Vollendorf is at3-over 147 after shooting 75 on Wednesday, while Adams sits at 149 after posting a 74.
Kristen Gillman of Austin, Texas, took over the lead in the girls division with an even-par 72 for a two-day total of 143. She surpassed Kallie Gonzales of Montgomery, Texas, who struggled with an 83 after shooting three under-par 69 on Tuesday.
Gillman, who shot 71 on Tuesday, made a birdie on No. 9 to help her take the second-round lead.
“On No. 9, I hit my 4-hybrid to lay up, and I had about 100 yards left,” Gillman said. “I then hit a three-quarter wedge to about five feet and made my putt. I’m feeling good, confident about (today).”
Summar Roachell of Conway shot an even-par 72 to move into a second-place tie at 1-over 145 with Cheyenne Knight of Aledo, Texas. Roachell will be a freshman for the Arkansas golf team in the fall.
