SPRINGDALE — Steven Dixon knows all about the great tradition involved with the Dwight Collins Chick-A-Tee Invitational.

Sunday, he added his own name to the tournament’s history.

Dixon, a regular golfer at Springdale Country Club and the defending stroke play champion at the club, won the 75th Chick-A-Tee with a three-day, 54-hole total of 8-under par 208. That included a final round 2-under 70, which was enough to hold off runner-up Kyle Fouts by two strokes.

“I’m very happy,” Dixon said. “This is the tournament I’ve always wanted to win. I grew up out here watching David Dyer and other guys like Ike Brewer last year. “And it was just good enough today. I didn’t think it would be after a slow start, but I got it done.”

Dixon found himself in familiar position entering Sunday’s final round. Playing in the final foursome, he began the day two strokes off the lead and quickly dug the hole deeper with a double bogey on his first hole.

It didn’t take Dixon long to turn his final round the right way, battling back to finish the first nine holes at 1-over par. By the time he headed to his last nine of the round, Dixon had evened up with second-day leaders Josh Farrell and Byron Shumate.

Birdies then followed at holes 10 and 11 and Dixon’s playing partners, Farrell, Shumate and Jacob Bartel could not catch up.

“By nine I had gotten it even and then I made the birdies on our 10th and 11th holes,” Dixon said. “From there I just kind of played it out.”

Dixon’s top competition actually came from the group playing just in front of him on Sunday. Kyle Fouts also raced off a pair of birdies on his last nine holes, moving at one point to 3-under on the day and 7-under in the tournament.

But a bogey by Fouts at the difficult, uphill par 4 8th hole — playing as No. 17 on Sunday — was too much to overcome.

“I put that ball there where you can’t put it — over the green,” said Fouts, who recently completed his collegiate golf career at Northeastern State University. “I was really anxious and pumped up when that happened.

“But I still came back and shoot a 33 on my last nine, so I was pretty happy.”

Farrell, a former University of Arkansas golfer, shot 75 on Sunday to finish tied for third, along with Michael Chaney, at 5-under 211.
