Hallwachs honored

Cooper Elementary School teacher Chrissy Hallwachs is the 2013 ArkansasHistory Teacher of the Year. Hallwachs received the honor from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, HISTORY and Preserve America.

A panel of teachers, administrators and academics from around the state chose Hallwachs for her use of primary documents in the classroom, the level of inspiration she provides for students and her career achievements in education.

Hallwachs will receive a $1,000 award for winning the honor along with an archive of books and historical resources for the Cooper Elementary library. She also will be invited to attend a 2014 Gilder Lehrman teacher seminar.

Cooper Elementary also will become a Gilder Lehrman Affiliate School. Affiliate schools receive invitations to forums with noted historians, access to exclusive online resources for teachers and priority access to teacherseminars, traveling exhibitions and classroom materials.

Hallwachs also is a finalist for the National History Teacher of the Year Award, which carries a $10,000 prize.

Taylor receives scholarship

Trent Taylor of Bellefonte has received a Presidential Scholarship to attendNorth Arkansas College in Harrison this fall.

Taylor is a graduate of Valley Springs High School. He is the son of Todd and Tammy Taylor.

Taylor was an honors graduate who earnednumerous awards including the Agri Science and Technology Award, the Greenhouse Award, the Service Award, the Dekalb Agri Accomplishment Award and the Vocational Completer Award.

Taylor plans to transfer to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville to study agricultural business, marketing and communications upon completing two years of study in Harrison.

Vaclavicek receives ACT Scholarship

Bethany Vaclavicek, a 2013 Valley Springs High School graduate, has receivedan ACT Scholarship to attend North Arkansas College in Harrison.

Vaclavicek is the daughter of Kevin and Belinda Vaclavicek.

During high school, she was a member of Spanish Club, Key Club, Science Club, Art Club, Photography Club, the basketball team and the yearbook staff.

She plans to major in engineering at the college.

Arkansas students win scholarships

Seven Arkansas students have won Horatio Alger Arkansas Scholarships, the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans announced last week.

Each scholar will receive $5,000 to go toward college tuition, books, fees and room and board.

Winners also gain access to financial aid and scholarship counseling; college readiness tools and assessments; 24-hour support and referral services;

free housing opportunities; graduate school funding; and access to a network of peers and alumni through the association’s website.

2013 winners of the Horatio Alger Arkansas Scholarship are Cynthia L. Alvarado and JenniferCedeno of Springdale High School; Kristen J. Campbell of Waldron High School;

Joshua B. McClelland and Keegan C. Wilbur of Eureka Springs High School; Matthew C. Shepherd of Dierks High School; and Kennia A.

Merlos of Bentonville High School.

Fayetteville grad gains major award

Sarah “Marlee” Stark, a Fayetteville High School graduate, hasbeen selected as a Stamps Leadership Scholar and will major in political science and economics at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The daughter of Claudine and Larry Stark, she was coeditor-in-chief of the Connotations literary magazine, president of Young Democrats and Liberals, a National Merit finalist and winner of the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation’s Nathan Allman Creative Writing Award.

The value of the Stamps Leadership Scholarship forfour years is about $260,000.

More than 500,000 applications were reviewed in consideration this year, with about 170 students selected.

Shook tabbed

as All-American

Sam Shook, a student and baseball player at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America team. Shook, a sophomore catcher, was named to the all-star list’s third team.

A mathematics major, Shook has a 3.89 grade point average. He also was named to the American Southwest Conference’s Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and All-Academic teams.

Ferrell named All-American

Jordyn Ferrell, a senior cross-country runner and basketball player at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, has been named to the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America Women’s Cross Country All-District Team.

Ferrell is a West Fork native who also was named to the President’s List and the Dean’s List at the university.

Oldham earns

IT scholarship

Krista Oldham of Fayetteville received the Information International Associates Scholarship from the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Oldham received her award at the school’s annual Hooding Ceremony on May 10.

Sykes named to Dean’s List

Bethany Sinclair Sykes of Fayetteville was named to the spring dean’s list with distinction at Duke University in Durham, N.C.

Students must rank in the top 10th percent of their college to earn dean’s list honors with distinction. Sykes is a neuroscience, psychology and global health major in the College of Arts and Sciences.

She is a 2012 graduate of Fayetteville High School and the daughter of Kermit and Dyanne Sykes.
