Women’s Air Race To End In Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE — Dozens of women aviators are scheduled to touch down June 20-21 at the Fayetteville Executive Airport.

They’re taking part in the 37th annual Air Race Classic, a cross-country event that begins in Pasco, Wash., and ends here. Competitors will take about four days to travel nearly 2,500 miles with stops in 10 cities. Each leg will be timed, and scores will be tallied by fastest times and types of aircraft.

The public is invited to watch the pilots land late Thursday and throughout the day Friday.

A free educational forum for girls who would like to meet the pilots and learn about aviation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 22 at the Arkansas Air and Military Museum, 4290 S. School Ave. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The forum is limited to 100 girls.

A night of dinner and dancing is planned from 6:30 to 10 p.m. June 22 in the museum’s World War II-era “White Hangar.” Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served, and the Jack Mitchell Big Band will perform. A cash bar will be available. Tickets are $25. To RSVP, call the museum at 479-521-4947. Attendees can pay at the door.

From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. June 23, the Fayetteville Underground, 101 W. Mountain St., will host a wine and cheese party, where “Women Take Flight,” a juried exhibition featuring 26 works of art, will be displayed.
