Rep. Baird announces bid for state treasurer

LITTLE ROCK — State Rep. Duncan Baird says he's seeking the Republican nomination for state treasurer next year.

Baird on Wednesday announced he's running for the office, becoming the second Republican to launch a bid. Saline County Circuit Clerk Dennis Milligan is also seeking the GOP nomination for the post.

Baird is serving his third term in the state House and is co-chairman of the powerful Joint Budget Committee.

No Democrats have announced a bid for state treasurer.

Martha Shoffner, a Democrat, resigned as treasurer in May after she was arrested and charged with steering state investments to a bond broker who gave her more than $36,000. Gov. Mike Beebe appointed former legislative auditor Charles Robinson to serve the remainder of her term.

Robinson can't run for the office since he was appointed.
