SUPERMARKET SLEUTH

It’s a new ‘O’ day for kids, and a nut

Since my son is grown, I don’t keep SpaghettiOs in my cabinet. He loved that type food as a kid, but not so much now. But kids of all ages may have renewed interest, now that the first new SpaghettiOs flavor in more than 20 years - CheeseburgerOs - is headed to stores. Campbell’s has combined the traditional Os with the cheesy meat flavor of a burger to get the new product.

Look for the new flavor in stores in August, where a 14-ounce can should cost about $1.25.

Are you a fan of the amazing pistachio? I sure am. I remember when they used to be dyed red. I did some research and found various answers why that was done. One source said it was to hide stains on the shells. Another claims it started with a Syrian importer, who wanted to distinguish his pistachios from his competitors’.

Setton Farms sells pistachios, and Pistachio Chewy Bites made with pistachios, cranberries and agave nectar. The bites are gluten- and dairy-free, low in sodium, vegan and have no GMOs (genetically modified organisms). They’re not sold in stores here, but you can order online at Amazon.com or Puritan.com. They are sold in bags of six and 16. Amazon also sells the company’s pistachios. The chewy, crunchy bites are rather small, but are delicious and make a nice little snack.

I frequently mention Lindt chocolates, truffles and seasonal items. The company recently debuted its Hello collection, sold exclusively at Target stores. The line is decidedly more grown up than most, and the packaging features eye-catching colors and graphics. The flavors are inspired by classic desserts most people are familiar with.
