BENTONVILLE — The man in charge of Benton County’s Road Department has been arrested in connection with a felony theft.

Scott Stober, public services administrator, was arrested in connection with misappropriation of county money, said County Judge Bob Clinard.

Keshia Guyll, spokesman for the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed Stober’s arrest. Stober is a Bella Vista resident, according to inmate information. Stober was booked into the jail a little after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

“This just did happen this afternoon,” Clinard said Tuesday. “I first learned about it last night. Obviously, I haven’t had a very good night’s sleep or a good day today.”

Clinard wouldn’t elaborate on Stober’s case.

“I don’t know what I can say and what I can’t say,” Clinard said. “I’ve been told he has been arrested on a felony theft charge and will probably be bonded out tomorrow (today). I’m just afraid to say much because I don’t want to say the wrong thing and cause problems for anyone.”

Grant McCracken will be interim director at the Road Department, Clinard said. McCracken, road superintendent, indicated he has no interest in the top job, and Clinard said the county will search for a replacement.

“I think I’d serve the county better in the position I’m in and I recommended to the judge that he hire someone with more experience,” McCracken said.

McCracken and Clinard are scheduled to meet with Road Department employees this morning.

Barb Ludwig, human resources director, said Stober was hired Dec. 19, 2011, at a salary of $54,326. His current salary was $63,500.

Stober, 46, was being held in the jail Tuesday with no bond set.

Theft of property is a Class C felony that involves money or items valued at $500 to $2,500. The charge is punishable with a prison sentence ranging from three to 10 years if convicted.
