Author James Patterson funds UA scholarship

FAYETTEVILLE — Bestselling author James Patterson has given $48,000 to establish a scholarship fund for University of Arkansas students majoring in elementary or secondary education.

Chancellor G. David Gearhart says he was contacted by Patterson to discuss the possibility of the scholarship fund. Patterson has funded similar scholarships at Vanderbilt, Michigan State University, the University of Wisconsin, Howard University and Appalachian State University.

Patterson says he hopes the students who receive the scholarships "will make substantial contributions in the lives of their students and their communities."

The James Patterson Teacher Education Scholarship fund will provide $6,000 scholarships to eight students in the College of Education and Health Professions.

Patterson's books have sold an estimated 275 million copies worldwide.
