Second thoughts

Scattered, smothered covered ball

Take me out to the ballgame … and Waffle House.

Waffle House has opened a concession stand at Turner Field in Atlanta, home of the National League East-leading Braves. The Norcross, Ga.-based restaurant’s stand features a menu with classic, peanut butter and chocolate chip waffles, as well as hash browns.

But since this Waffle House is at a ballpark, the prices are a little higher than they would be at a regular location. The “All the Way” hash browns (onions, cheese, chili, ham and peppers) cost $9 at Turner Field. A classic waffle is $5.75, while the chocolate chip and peanut butter waffles are $6.50.

Regular hash browns are $5.25 with extra toppings costing 75 cents apiece and Bert’s chili for $1.50. As far as beverages go for the Turner Field Waffle House, no coffee is available, but bottled water is $4 and a soft drink is $4.75.

Former Braves star Chipper Jones was very excited about having Waffle House in his ballpark.

“A rednecks sweetest dream….. Waffle House is now at Turner Field! My life is complete,” Jones tweeted.

This is the first Waffle House inside a major league stadium, but it’s also the only location that won’t be open 24 hours.

“Man, it would have been handy to have a Waffle House at Fulton County Stadium for the Fourth of July game against the Mets in 1985 that ended in the wee hours,” Yahoo! Sports writer David Brown wrote. “Waffles, Rick Camp and 4 a.m. fireworks?

Who’s ready?!”

The New York Mets beat the Braves 16-13 in 19 innings July 4, 1985. Camp hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the 18th inning, but he allowed 5 runs in the top of the 19th to take the loss in a game that lasted 6 hours and 10 minutes.

Good gesture

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Monday that the Milwaukee Brewers are “giving back” to their fans after last week’s suspension of left fielder Ryan Braun.

Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio announced Monday that all fans attending any of the 12 Brewers home games in August will receive a $10 voucher for free concessions, merchandise and game tickets at Miller Park.

The voucher is good at nearly every outlet in Miller Park except for Friday’s Front Row, portable merchandise stands, Miller Park suites, the stadium club and all-inclusive entertaining areas. If a fan attends multiple games, the vouchers may be combined for larger purchases.

The Brewers said they expect to distribute more than $3.6 million worth of vouchers.

Braun is forfeiting $3.1 million in pay while he’s suspended after violating MLB’s Basic Agreement and its Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment program.

Tune time

Steve Schrader of the Detroit Free Press found a way to use troubled New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez in lyrics set to John Fogerty’s 1985 hit “Centerfield”.

“Oh, put me in Coach, I’m ready to play today,” Schrader wrote.

“Put me in, Coach, I’m ready to play today. Look at me, I can be, PED-free.”Quote of the day
