Miller becomes Eagle Scout

Aaron Randall Miller, 15, of Rogers recently became an Eagle Scout.

Miller is a member of Troop 2144, which is sponsored by Bentonville/Rogers Elks Lodge No. 2144. He is the son of Joseph and Cindy Miller.

For his Eagle Scout project, Miller rebuilt the split-rail fence around the Borden House at Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park. Miller and his team of volunteers rebuilt a total of 750 yards of fence.

New courtyard honors Norton

Walnut Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation in Springdale will dedicate a newly refurbished courtyard in honor of current resident Elizabeth Norton on her 100th birthday.

Norton will be 100 years old today. A mayor’s proclamation will be read during a special event today, followed by the ribbon-cutting and dedication.

Norton’s children will provide photos and memorabilia. The event begins at 10 a.m in Walnut Grove’s front lobby.

Angels Pageant set for Aug. 24

The second Northwest Arkansas Angels Pageant for people with special needs is set for 1 p.m.

Aug. 24 at the First Assembly of God Church in Bentonville.

The pageant is a nonprofit, non-competitive event and is open to anyone with a medically diagnosed special need. There is no age limit for participants.

Each participant will receive a sash, a crown, a T-shirt and a goody bag. Registration is required.

Sponsors and volunteers are also needed.

Dickie wins art contest

Eureka Springs artist Carol Dickie won first place in the 65th River Valley Invitational Art Show at the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum.

As the winner, Dickie will receive a solo exhibit at the Regional Art Museum in 2014 and $1,000. Dickie’s winning work was titled “Tethered.” Hudock wins fellowship award

Pediatric cancer survivor Tyler Hudock of Rogers received the Julius Tauchner Tenenbaum Fellowship Awardand a CARTI Kids Dennis Jungmeyer Scholarship during a special ceremony last month at the Governor’s Mansion in Little Rock.

The Jungmeyer scholarship is valued at $2,500.

Hudock receivedthe awards from Jungmeyer, fellowship award sponsor Judy Tenenbaum and Arkansas First Lady Ginger Beebe.

Chiles honored as educator

Kaye Chiles has been awarded the Rogers Educator of the Year for the middleschool level for the 2012-13 school year. The award was presented before the end of the school year at Kirksey Middle School.

Chiles teaches sixth-grade English and reading at the middleschool. She is known for her dedication to her students and her innovative approach to teaching.

Tonymon named OLLI director

Susan Tonymon has been named director of the Osher LifelongLearning Institute at the University of Arkansas, the university announced.

Tonymon was formerly the director of the Beck PRIDE Center for America’s Wounded Veterans at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. She also served on Gov. Mike Beebe’s Arkansas Yellow Ribbon Task Force.

Tonymon has a master’s degree in social work and is certified as a licensed master social worker.

Elkins nurse honored

Karen Robertson Reynolds of Elkins received the 2013 StateAward for Excellence from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Reynolds was honored during the group’s national conference held in Las Vegas in June.

The award recognizes nurse practitioners who go above and beyond. Reynolds is the founder of Hometown Healthcare in Elkins.

Merrill receives

nursing award

Erin Armstrong Merrill, a 2006 University of Arkansas graduate, isthe winner of the 2013 Spirit of Nursing Award for Excellence in Patient Care from the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.

The medical center selects a nurse each year from the 1,600 registered nurses employed there to receive the award. Merrill has a lead staff position at the hospital, which is the largest healthcare facility and teaching hospital in the state.

Merrill was also selected to attend the 2012 MagnetConference in California on behalf of the center. She has volunteered for the past six years at a youth camp for underprivileged kids in Arkansas.

UA student earns honor

Bethany Sebesta, a senior horticulture, landscape and turf sciencesmajor at the University of Arkansas, recently co-authored a paper that placed second nationally in the competition for the American PomologicalSociety’s U.P. Hedrick Award.

The paper, “Pyrene Attributes and Seediness Evaluation of Blackberry Genotypes,” was co-written by Sebesta; UA horticulture professor John Clark; UA food science professor Luke Howard; and Renee Threlfall, a research scientist for the UA Division of Agriculture’s Institute of Food Science and Engineering.

The paper focused on the evaluation of blackberry seeds under development in the Division of Agriculture’s blackberry breeding program.

Sebesta is a Bentonville native who is interning thissummer with a berry breeding company in Watsonville, Calif.

Airola appointed to board

Denise Airola, director of the Office of Innovation for Education atthe University of Arkansas, has been appointed to the South Central Comprehensive Center Regional Advisory Board by Tom Kimbrell,Arkansas commissioner of education.

Airola will represent Arkansas at the center, which is based at the University of Oklahoma.

The center is designed to work with state education agencies in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma to help districts and schools meet requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

Thea announces scholarships

The Thea Foundation has announced the winners of its 2013 Film Scholarship Competition, sponsored in part by the Arkansas Educational Television Network.

Winners were announced and honored during the Student Selects portion of the Little Rock Film Festival.

Winners are Zak Heald, cinematography, $2,500, Gravette High School; Anna Thompson, directing, $2,500, Har-Ber High School, Springdale; Robert Crisp, editing, $2,500, Har-Ber High School, Springdale; and Joseph Largent, screenwriting, $2,500, Fayetteville High School.

UA student attends conference

Hailey Dunsworth, an Honors College student at the University of Arkansas, presented her research at the annual meeting of the North American Membrane Society.

Dunsworth, a chemical engineering major, was one of 10 students who received the Elias Klein Travel Grant to attend the conference. She was the only undergraduate to receive the award.

At the conference, Dunsworth presented a poster about her research on reverse electrodialysis. She is part of a research experience for undergraduates program called EcoREU.
