100 YEARS AGO July 25, 1913

That the “blue sky” law rapidly is gaining the respect of promoters in all branches of the state’s industry was evidenced by a letter received yesterday by J.J. Beavers, clerk of the department in the office of the auditor of state, from James Gould, attorney and real estate dealer of Pine Bluff. In his letter Mr. Gould set forth that he recently had sold some property and that he also had received a pamphlet from the “blue sky” department, setting forth the provisions of the law. He explained that his was but a straight sale of property for cash, but that if in the opinion of the department heads he had violated any terms of the act he would gladly invite an investigation.

50 YEARS AGO July 25, 1963

Six pinball machines, seized in December in Little Rock and North Little Rock, went up in smoke yesterday. Four more pinball machines, seized in March in West Memphis, are still held in storage in Little Rock pending outcome of proceedings in the federal district court at Jonesboro. The Internal Revenue Service chopped up six machines seized locally, poured gasoline on them and tossed in a match.

25 YEARS AGO July 25, 1988

Little Rock restaurateur and activist Robert “Say” McIntosh, irked that Gov. Bill Clinton has been criticized for a long speech, is having a luncheon Wednesday for Clinton. McIntosh said Sunday he was irritated that national news commentators have criticized Clinton and that Johnny Carson has made Clinton the butt of several jokes. The luncheon begins at noon Wednesday in the Capital rotunda. To eat, a diner must bring a letter addressed to a news commentator or Carson, indicating support for Clinton and his ability as an orator, McIntosh said.

Point. Click. Vote. A Department of Defense pilot program to allow military personnel and other overseas Arkansans to vote on the Internet will be available in Pulaski and seven other Arkansas counties in time for federal primary elections in the spring. The Secure Electronic Registration and Voting Experiment, or SERVE, will make it possible for Arkansans living abroad to register online for a digital certification number, request an absentee ballot, then vote without leaving the computer.
