Fill-in pitcher helps Mets topple hapless Braves

NEW YORK - Carlos Torres pitched six impressive innings as a fill-in starter and had an RBI single, Ike Davis turned an angry crowd in his favor with a go-ahead double in a three-run sixth and the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 Tuesday night.

John Buck had a run-scoring single and Juan Lagares a sacrifice fly in a sixth inning that helped the Mets beat Atlanta’s Kris Medlen (6-10) for the first time in eight starts.

Torres (1-1) gave up seven hits, including a home run to Andrelton Simmons on the second pitch of the game, in his second start of the season, pitching out of trouble in the first four innings. The one run actually caused his ERA to increase to 0.94 in 28 2/3 innings this season - 12 appearances.

Bobby Parnell bounced back from wasting a 1-0, ninth-inning lead in a 2-1 loss Monday night to pitching a perfect ninth for his 19th save. The Mets have won seven of 11.

The Braves had ample opportunities to pad their lead in the early innings. But they went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position over the first four innings and were 1 for 8 overall. The NL East leaders fell to 2-3 on their seven-game trip.

Medlen gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He dropped to 4-1 in 18 outings against New York.

REDS 9, GIANTS 3 Devin Mesoraco had a three-run home run among his three hits for his second longball in as many games, Joey Votto and Zack Cozart also connected, and visiting Cincinnati pounded San Francisco for the second consecutive game with a victory in the opener of a doubleheader.

PIRATES 5, NATIONALS 1 Gerrit Cole pitched seven strong innings to end a personal three-game losing streak, and added an RBI single as Pittsburgh Pirates beat host Washington.Pedro Alvarez homered and singled, and Russell Martin had three hits for Pittsburgh, which has won three consecutive.

CARDINALS 4, PHILLIES 1 Shelby Miller (10-6) threw six shutout innings and Allen Craig drove in two runs to lead St. Louis to a victory over visiting Philadelphia.

PADRES 6, BREWERS 2 Nick Hundley and Will Venable each homered, and Tyson Ross won for the first time in over a year in San Diego’s victory over host Milwaukee. Hundley was 3 for 4 with three runs batted in for San Diego.

MARLINS 4, ROCKIES 2 Rookie Jose Fernandez pitched seven strong innings and Christian Yelich went 3 for 4 with two RBI in his major league debut, lifting visiting Miami to a victory over Colorado.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

RED SOX 6, RAYS 2 Jon Lester matched his season high with eight strikeouts and overcame home runs by Wil Myers and Evan Longoria as host Boston remained in first place with a victory over Tampa Bay. The Red Sox moved 1½ games ahead of the Rays in the AL East.

ROYALS 3, ORIOLES 2 Bruce Chen tossed six strong innings, Greg Holland pitched out of a ninth-inning jam, and Kansas City held on to beat visiting Baltimore.

YANKEES 5, RANGERS 4 Eduardo Nunez hit a tying triple, Brent Lillibridge followed with a go-ahead single and New York rallied against All-Star closer Joe Nathan in the ninth inning for a victory over host Texas.

TIGERS 6, WHITE SOX 2 Rick Porcello pitched four-hit ball over seven scoreless innings, Jhonny Peralta homered and visiting Detroit took advantage of four errors in a victory over Chicago. Porcello (7-6) won his third consecutive start after dropping three in a row.

ASTROS 5, ATHLETICS 4 Rookie Jonathan Villar scored the winning run from second base in the ninth inning when catcher Derek Norris had a passed ball and then made a bad throw on the same play to give host Houston a victory over Oakland.

INTERLEAGUE

DODGERS 10, BLUE JAYS 9 Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run home run, Andre Ethier and Jerry Hairston Jr. added solo shots and streaking Los Angeles beat host Toronto for its fifth consecutive victory and 22nd in 27 games.
