Tigers’ Cabrera injured; Scherzer moves to 14-1

CHICAGO - Max Scherzer outpitched Chris Sale in a marquee matchup of All-Star starters, and the Detroit Tigers overcame Miguel Cabrera’s injury to beat the Chicago White Sox 7-3 on Monday night.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Cabrera was replaced at third base by Don Kelly. The 2012 AL MVP, who appeared to be holding his left side as he walked off the field, was removed with a sore hip flexor muscle and will be evaluated today.

Cabrera, who became baseball’s first Triple Crown winner in 45 years last season, has played in 97 of Detroit’s 98 games this year. He began the day leading the AL with a .359 batting average and 96 RBI.

Scherzer (14-1) won his first 13 decisions before losing his last outing before he started the All-Star game for the American League last Tuesday night at Citi Field. He went 8 innings Monday and allowed 4 hits while striking out 5.

The right-hander, who didn’t allow a base runner until Adam Dunn’s single with one out in the fifth, increased his league-leading strikeout total to 157.

The only two runs Scherzer gave up came on home runs by Dayan Viciedo and Conor Gillaspie.

Victor Martinez had four hits and Torii Hunter (Pine Bluff) homered in the seventh for Detroit, which lost two of three to Kansas City last weekend.

Sale (6-9) followed Scherzer to the mound in the All-Star game and worked two scoreless innings. This time, the left-hander pitched 8 innings and gave up 4 runs - 2 earned. He yielded seven hits while striking out 11.

RANGERS 3, YANKEES 0 Yu Darvish returned from the 15-day disabled list, allowing twosingles over 6 1/3 scoreless innings and host Texas shut out the New York Yankees. Darvish (9-4) who last pitched July 6 before going on the disabled list with a right trapezius strain, struck out four and walked two. He left after allowing consecutive batters to reach in the seventh, having thrown 60of 90 pitches for strikes.

RAYS 3, RED SOX 0 Tampa Bay’s Matt Moore pitched his first career shutout, a two-hitter to beat host Boston to give the Rays their sixth consecutive victory. Ben Zobrist had three hits and James Loney drove in two runs for the Rays, who have lost just twice in 20 games since June 28. In the last month, the Rays have improved from last place to one-half game behind Boston in the AL East.

ATHLETICS 4, ASTROS 3 Josh Reddick put visiting Oakland on top with a two-run home run in the eighth inning and the Athletics remained undefeated this season against Houston. Chris Young also homered for the A’s, who are 10-0 against their new AL West foes this season and 15-1 all-time.

ORIOLES 9, ROYALS 2 Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy each drove in three runs and visiting Baltimore beat Kansas City to extend its winning streak to a season-high five games.

NATIONAL LEAGUE BRAVES 2, METS 1 Jason Heyward made a diving catch with runners on first and second and two outs in the ninth inning after pinch-hitter Reed Johnson hit a go-ahead single with two outs in a two-run top half, leading Atlanta to a comeback victory over the host New York Mets. The Braves did not get their first hit off Dillon Gee until Freddie Freeman led off the seventh with a single. But the NL East leaders ended their two-game skid against Bobby Parnell (5-5).

PIRATES 6, NATIONALS 5 Andrew McCutchen hit 2 two-run home runs and visiting Pittsburgh beat skidding Washington. McCutchen connected in the first inning and again in the third to give the Pirates a 4-0 lead.

PADRES 5, BREWERS 3 Jesus Guzman homered and had three RBI to lift San Diego over host Milwaukee.

MARLINS 3, ROCKIES 1 Tom Koehler pitched seven innings, Ed Lucas homered and visiting Miami scored for the first time in four games in a victory over Colorado. The Marlins’ scoring drought reached a franchise-record 37 innings after being swept at Milwaukee over the weekend.

INTERLEAGUE DODGERS 14, BLUE JAYS 5 A.J. Ellis hit a two-run home run and drove in a career-best five runs and Los Angeles beat host Toronto for its fourth consecutive victory and 21st in 26 games. Skip Schumaker added a three-run shot as the Dodgers moved a season-high four games above .500 and won their eighth road game in a row, their longest streak since a nine-game run in July 2004.
