FAYETTEVILLE - When Arkansas’ coaches and players talk about “Duwop,” they’re referring to freshman quarterback Damon Mitchell.

“Duwop is what my family and friends know me as, my coaches and teammates,” Mitchell said.

“Even my professors here at Arkansas call me that.”

Mitchell said his mother, April Bell, gave him the nickname when he was a toddler.

“There was a doo-wop song playing on the radio one day in the kitchen and my mom was listening to it while she was cooking,” Mitchell said. “She’d been listening to music all day, but I hadn’t hardly budged, and then the doo-wop song came on and I stood up in my high chair and started dancing.

“My mom said I rocked the chair so hard I almost fell out it. So she started calling me Duwop, and it stuck.”
