GOLF Carpenter advances at Southern Amateur

Little Rock’s Alex Carpenter, the 2010 winner of the Southern Amatuer Championship, was the only Arkansan to make the cut at this year’s event at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas, after firing a 1-over-par 73 on Thursday.

Carpenter shot a 2-under 70 on Wednesday for a two day, 1-under 143 total, leaving him in a tie for 39th place.

Seven Arkansans missed the 2-over 146 cut, including Carpenter’s brother Luke, who shot a 5-over 77 and finished at 11-over 155. Also not advancing were: Austin Eoff of Benton (6 over), Sean Romero of Texarkana (6 over), Wesley Harris of Hot Springs (15 over), Eddie Craven of Maumelle (23 over), Baxter Woosley of Little Rock (24 over) and Alex Hewitt of Little Rock (25 over). Arkansas senior Emma Lavy shot a 5-under-par 67 on Thursday to advance to match play portion of the 111th annual Women’s North and South Amateur Championship in Pinehurst N.C.

The Fayetteville native made two birdies on her front nine and three more on the back to move into a tie for 15th place at 2 over, which was good enough to send her to the round of 16 today against Mariah Stackhouse of Riverdale, Ga.

The pair will tee off at 6:30 a.m. Central today. The winner will play a quarterfinal match at noon. Semifinal and final matches will be Saturday at Pinehurst Country Club.

UA freshman Summar Roachell made the cut into the top 60 but could not advance to match play after shooting a 9-over 81 on Thursday.

FOOTBALL ASU 7-on-7 canceled

Thursday’s Arkansas State University 7-on-7 passing tournament in Jonesboro was canceled following two lightning delays totaling approximately four hours.

Twenty schools from Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi were scheduled to play four pool rounds before beginning a single-elimination tournament at 3:30 p.m.

MOTOR SPORTS Fox Memorial at I-30

Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway will host the Fox Memorial modified event tonight and Saturday. The winner of Saturday night’s main event will collect $2,000.

The Southern United Professional Racing late model series will also compete both nights.

Adult grandstand admission is $10 tonight and $20 Saturday night. Children aged 6-12 get in for $1 each night. Pit passes are $25 tonight and $30 Saturday night. Racing starts at 7:30 both nights.
