Official: Identity Of Body Not Confirmed Yet

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas State Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding a body found Wednesday morning on Interstate 540.

Lt. John Overman said investigators think they know who the man is, but won’t release the name until his identity has been confirmed.

“The body was unrecognizable so they will have to take a DNA swab and send it to Little Rock,” he said. “It could be four or five days until we get the results.”

A state trooper found the man’s body in the northbound lane on I-540 under the Wedington Drive overpass just before 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from state police.

The person’s cause of death hasn’t been determined, but detectives are investigating the possibility the person may have been struck by a car while crossing the interstate or jumped from the overpass, according to the release.

The victim appeared to have been struck several times by northbound traffic, though no vehicles were at the scene when police arrived, investigators said.

Roger Morris, Washington County coroner, said the body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy.
