A delegate from Heber Springs called on Faubus yesterday to complete such plans and the governor told them that “right now, you could raise more money to keep Kennedy out of the state than to bring him in.” Prior to the arrival of the delegation, Faubus told reporters, “I don’t think they need me on this, but I will meet with them.” Reluctantly, the governor agreed to be a part of the event by officially welcoming the President. Faubus made it plain that this is a visit by the President ofthe United States and politics shouldn’t be allowed to enter into the ceremonies. The Arkansas governor is strongly opposed to the Kennedy civil rights campaign.

J. “Bill” McCuen before the race. McCuen got down on his hands and knees in front of the state Capitol, whistling, blowing and beating his hands on the pavement to cheer“Capitol” on to victory.
