Fig bars fill the bill for healthful snack

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

I often find myself trolling the supermarket looking for new and interesting snacks, especially those I can keep in my desk drawer at work to quell afternoon hunger attacks. I recently discovered Nature’s Bakery All-Natural Fig Bars on the shelf near the granola and nut bars. I was intrigued so I bought a box, and I’m glad I did. The bars are not only delicious, they’re convenient and a welcome alternative to the classic Fig Newton-style cookies.

The bars come in wholewheat fig; apple cinnamon; blueberry; peach apricot; raspberry; vanilla fig; and vanilla raspberry. Mango and strawberry flavors will be available later this summer. The bars are made with stone-ground whole wheat and California figs. They’re kosher, Non-GMO Project verified (meaning they contain no “genetically modified organisms”), dairy free, and contain no trans fat. Most of the flavors are 110 calories, 2 g fat, 20 g carbohydrate and 1 to 2 g fiber per serving.

The bars are available at Kroger and Wal-Mart stores, and online at Amazon.com. A 12-ounce box of six bars cost me about $3.

Over the last few years I’ve developed a taste for nuts in salads. I don’t always keep nuts on hand but I might, now that I’ve found Wonderful Almond Accents. They come in six flavors - Honey Roasted with Cranberries; Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper; Honey Roasted; Sweet Roasted with Pomegranate; Original Oven Roasted; and Oven Roasted No Salt. They’re thinly sliced and crunchy, and really add a nice dimension to salads, or even slaw.

For information, go to WonderfulAlmondAccents.com. The store locator says they’re sold at Kroger and Wal-Mart stores, where a 3.5-ounce bag should cost about $4.

From now through July 31, consumers can enter Eggland’s Best Chief Egg Officer contest. The grand prize winner will receive $5,000 and a year’s supply of eggs. Two runners-up will win $500 and a six-month supply of eggs. Submissions will be judged on creativity, knowledge of Eggland’s Best eggs and ability to represent the brand. To enter, or for information, visit EgglandsBest.com/chiefeggofficer. There’s not a lot of time, so get cracking!
