School board races in Bentonville, Pea Ridge

Bentonville and Pea Ridge will see school board races this year.

Matt Burgess will challenge incumbent Rudy Upshaw for the Zone 6 seat on the Bentonville School Board. Burgess filed his petitions to run today. The filing period ended at noon today. The election is Sept. 17.

Upshaw was appointed to the School Board in May 2012 to fill a seat left vacant when Beth Haney resigned. He beat three opponents in last September's school board elections to retain the seat.

After the Bentonville School Board changed to zoned seats last year, board members drew lots to determine when each position would be up for re-election so that no more than two seats would be up for election every year. Upshaw drew the 2013 election.

There will be a four-person race for Pea Ridge School Board's Position 3. Darin Wright, the incumbent, will face challengers John Dye, Braxton Hurst and Ron Mullikin.

Elsewhere in Benton County, incumbents were the only people to file to run for their respective seats, including Curtis Clements in Rogers, Louie Thomas in Siloam Springs, John R. Edwards in Gravette, David Williamson and Randall Bolinger in Gentry, and Kevin W. Smith in Decatur. Williamson and Smith filed as write-in candidates.

Nobody filed to run for one expiring seat on the Decatur School Board. That seat is held by Amy Brooks.
