Cotton Plant man charged with two counts of murder

A Cotton Plant man has been arrested in connection with a Saturday night shooting, according to a news release from the Independence County sheriff’s office.

Akeen Lewis, 23, was charged Monday with two counts of second-degree murder, the release states. His bond has been at $250,000.

Officers received a call reporting gunshots at 295 Dry Run Circle in Independence County around 8 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found Omar Scales, 25, in a vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound on the left side of his abdomen. Inside the residence, officers found John L. Weems, 47, on the couch with a gun beside him and an apparent gunshot wound to the upper chest.

Scales and Weems were taken to White River Medical Center, where they were later pronounced dead.

Witnesses told officers the shooter had left in a “white Ford with rims and tinted windows,” according to the release.

Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division and Patrol Division worked throughout the night, conducting a search warrant of the scene. Lewis was found and arrested Sunday.

No further information was immediately available Monday afternoon.
