News and notes

Third baseman Zack Cox (Arkansas Razorbacks) was promoted by the Miami Marlins on Thursday to Class AAA New Orleans. Cox, who was traded by the St. Louis Cardinals for reliever Edward Mujica last season, had been with Class AA Jacksonville since joining the Marlins. He batted .281 with 17 RBI in 50 games with Jacksonville, scoring 16 runs with 47 hits. The solid start to the season and injuries in New Orleans made the move necessary. “We had Kevin Kouzmanoff as our third baseman and he got hurt,” Zephyrs media relations manager Dave Sachs said. “When the Marlins recalled Donovan Solano, we were down to only four infielders, so Cox was the natural choice to come up to play third.” Cox made his debut with New Orleans on Thursday, going 0 for 2 with a walk in a 2-1 loss to Oklahoma City.

Pitcher Justin Thomas (Southern Arkansas) was assigned to Class A Auburn (N.Y.) by the Washington Nationals on Monday after appearing in only three games with the Nationals’ rookie league team. “I believe Justin was promoted to Auburn because the Doubledays need some help in the bullpen and he deserved to be promoted from the [rookie league team],” Graham Doty, Auburn’s manager of media relations and broadcasting, said. Thomas made his debut with Auburn on Tuesday, allowing 1 hit with 1 strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.

Outfielder Forrestt Allday (Central Arkansas) has not played for the Lowell Spinners (A Red Sox) since June 20 because of an undisclosed injury. Jon Boswell, director of media relations for the Spinners, said Allday “pulled a muscle in his last game appearance. He has not been placed on the disabled list but is still nursing the injury.” Boswell said the team would not state specifics about the injury but said “it was a lower body muscle as he went back to the bag on a pick off play.”

Pitcher DJ Baxendale (Arkansas Razorbacks) was activated from the disabled list by the New Britain Rock Cats (AA Twins) on Friday. Baxendale pitched for the Rock Cats Saturday against the Portland Sea Dogs (AA Red Sox).
