Suspect arrested after knife attack

A Sebastian County man was being held in the county jail in lieu of bond Friday after he was arrested in the throat slashing of another man who had surgery for injuries that were not life-threatening, a sheriff ’s investigator said.

Paul Robert Buikema was being held on a charge of first-degree battery, according to jail records.

Buikema was arrested Wednesday in Fort Smith after the knife attack occurred at a residence in the Greenwood area, a news releasefrom the sheriff ’s department said. There was a fight, though authorities didn’t explain what happened.

After the fight, the victim’s girlfriend was driving him for medical treatment but decided to stop at a Jenny Lind store to call for an ambulance. The man was treated there, then was transported to Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith.

Investigator Philip Pevehouse would not name the victim, who he described as a man in his 30s. He said the man had surgery for severe cuts to the throat area and is expected to recover.
