Other days

— 100 YEARS AGO Jan. 31, 1913 JONESBORO - A ruse on the part of Ellis Hall, county jailer, probably prevented a jail delivery here today. Having overheard several prisoners planning to escape, Hall led them to believe he was ignorant of their plans and told them he was gong out to serve some legal papers. Once on the outside, Jailer Hall watched, and caught the men at work attempting to drill a hole through the brick wall of the jail.

50 YEARS AGO Jan. 31, 1963 Wide-mouth sugar bowls in public eating places were given the old heave-ho by the State Board of Health but the operators of the cafes will have about a week to make the change. It’s put up or shut up for the General Assembly this week. Legislators, who urged Gov. Bill Clinton last year to allow them the chance to pass an ethics bill, were given a one-week deadline by the governor Friday. Clinton watchedfor three days as his ethics bill floundered in the slowmoving House and Senate committees, and ended the week with an ultimatum. “I think if we can’t do something (this week) then we probably ought not to do anything. We ought to go home.” 10 YEARS AGO Jan. 31, 2003

More details emerged Thursday about two alternatives to Gov. Mike Huckabee’s consolidation plan. A tougher proposal would consolidate more school districts than Huckabee proposes. A softer plan would give districts three years to meet standards or face consolidating. Also Thursday, a state senator who supports consolidation accused officials at a rural Garland County school district of using children as “political pawns” in the consolidation debate. Sen. Jim Argue, D-Little Rock, said he received 34 letters from second-grade students, one calling him “mean” and accusing him of wanting to “tear down our school.” “How many 7-year-old kids do you know that are reading newspaper articles about school district consolidation?” Argue asked. He demanded that the school district discipline the adults responsible for it.
