Parkview gets rolling, throttles Conway

— Little Rock Parkview’s boys used a 30-3 run through the middle of the game to pull away from Conway for a 70-36 victory in a 7A/6A-Central game Tuesday night.

Conway (12-7, 3-4) pulled within 19-15 on Dominic Taylor’s three-pointer to start the second quarter. From that point, the Patriots’ extended half-court defense gave Conway headaches.

Parkview (12-2, 6-1) outscored Conway 24-3 the remainder of the quarter, including the final 16 points of the half. The Patriots then opened the third quarter with six consecutive points, all but sealing the victory.

“We got a little intensity there,” Little Rock Parkview Coach Al Flanigan said. “I wasn’t satisfied altogether, but we picked it up and played a little bit better. We were trying to switch on every ball pick because we know they can shoot the ball.”

Sophomore Jaylen Franklin started the spurt with a basket. He was fouled and missed the free throw, but gathered his own miss and put it back for a 23-15 lead. After two free throws by junior Anton Beard, Franklin made a steal and layup. Senior I.J. Ready scored the last seven points of the half for a 43-18 Parkview lead.

Beard’s basket to open the third quarter was followed by a steal and dunk by Franklin. Ready then followed with a steal and layup to make it a 31-point lead just one minute into the second half.

Conway answered with an 8-0 run, as Tim Boyd hit a three-pointer and Justin Leon scored five consecutive points, but that was the last sign of life for the Wampus Cats.

In addition to the expected big games from Beard (23) and Ready (22), who combined for 45 points, Franklin sparked the Patriots with 14 points and seven rebounds.

“I think I made him mad,” Flanigan said of Franklin.“I took him out because he wasn’t doing anything. He did the right thing: instead of getting mad at me, he went and took it out on Conway.”

Leon scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Conway.
