— 100 YEARS AGO Jan. 30, 1913 WASHINGTON - Arkansas - conceded record holder in the making of governmental precedent - has: In two years elected six governors (1907-1909). In two months chosen five United States Senators. In two weeks had one man as representative in Congress, governor and United States senator-elect. Gov. Joe T. Robinson, senator-elect, is responsible for the climax. The governor’s resignation from Congress became effective January 14; the next day he was inaugurated governor; 14 days later he was elected to the United States Senate.

50 YEARS AGO Jan. 30, 1963

A Russian brown bear cub, weighing less than a pound, has been adopted by a dog at the Little Rock Zoo. The cub, its eyes not yet open, had to be taken from its own mother. “Because wild animals in captivity sometimes become neglectful, they may either kill their young or refuse to care for them,” said Raymond Squires, Little Rock Zoo director. “The two seem to have grown fond of each other,” Squires continued, “but we aren’t surethe situation will work out because we’ve never heard of its being done before.” The dog, when temporarily taken away, always finds her way back to the nursery. And the cub yelps when its adopted mother leaves for any amount of time, Squires said.

25 YEARS AGO Jan. 30, 1988

Senators voted Friday in favor of amendments aimed at constitutional questions raised by a proposed law that would revoke the drivers licenses of teen-agers found guilty of abusing alcohol or drugs. The bill would automatically revoke a license for a year, or until the driver turned 17.

10 YEARS AGO Jan. 30, 2003

Gov. Mike Huckabee, fearful of “screaming matches” in smaller communities, said Wednesday that he’ll stick close to Little Rock for the time being as he promotes school district consolidation. During a press conference at the Capitol, Huckabee announced an alternate way to disseminate information about his plan: a new Web site that plays recorded images of him talking about consolidation.
