Oaklawn Park report

— Lukas filly injured in accident

The horse involved in Saturday morning’s training accident at Oaklawn Park was the promising 3-year-old filly Boustierre, Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said Sunday morning.

“I thought she might be an Oaks filly,” Lukas said, referring to the Kentucky Oaks. “She’s resting, but she can’t move.”

Lukas said the daughter of Empire Maker, a Jan. 18 debut winner at 1 1-16 miles, was badly bruised after colliding with a pony ridden by outrider John Garges.

Lukas wouldn’t speculate on Boustierre’s future as a race horse or a broodmare.

“We’ll just give her time and hope it turns out OK,” Lukas said.

Garges suffered a broken arm in the accident, said David Longinotti, Oaklawn’s assistant general manager/ racing.

Lukas said Joel Cano, the exercise rider aboard Boustierre, underwent surgery to repair a broken ankle and remained hospitalized late Sunday morning.

Garges was tracking a loose horse the wrong way (clockwise) along the rail when the accident occurred near the quarter pole moments after the track opened for training, Longinotti said.

Borel update

Two-time Oaklawn jockey champion Calvin Borel “probably” should be able to resume riding this weekend, said his agent, Jerry Hissam of Hot Springs.

Borel hasn’t ridden at the meeting after suffering a broken wrist Jan. 8 - three days before the season began.

He was expected to miss three weeks.

Borel needs one victory to become the 26th rider in North American history to reach 5,000.

Back on track

Brown Almighty returned to the track Sunday morning for the first time since finishing fifth in last Monday’s $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes for 3-year-olds, co-owner Richard Robertson of Camden said.

Trainer Tim Ice said Brown Almighty came out of the Smarty Jones with a lung infection after a “very significant” amount of mucus was found in the colt’s airway.

Attending veterinarian Bill Hawk “hadn’t seen one that full of mucus in years,” Ice said.

“It’s something that happens,” Ice said.

“Unfortunately with the weather, and all these horses coming together from different places, you’re going to have horses get sick. Unfortunately for us, he never showed any signs or we wouldn’t have run him.”

Ice said if Brown Almighty doesn’t make the $300,000 Grade III Southwest Stakes on Feb. 18, the $400,000 Grade II Risen Star Stakes on Feb. 23 at Fair Grounds in New Orleans would be a target.

Claim wars

There were 14 claims totaling $185,000 on Sunday, pushing the season totals to 60 for $954,000.

Trainer Kenny Smith won an 11-way shake, or blind draw, to claim Blushing Touch for $20,000 out of the fourth race.

The 3-year-old Street Boss filly was making only her second career start.

Trainer Federico Villafranco, on behalf of leading Remington Park owner Danny Caldwell, claimed two horses, winning a seven-way shake to take Graysonia for $12,500 out of the first.

Villafranco/Caldwell also lost two horses through claims Sunday.

Gone cold

Robby Albarado is still comfortably ahead in the race for leading rider, but he’s cooled off in recent days.

Albarado is winless in 20 mounts since riding Cyber Secret to victory in last Monday’s seventh race.

Albarado’s 11 victories are still five better than Alex Birzer and Terry Thompson, who share second in the standings.

Albarado was Oaklawn’s leading rider in 1996 and 1997.

Final furlong

Apprehender earned a 98 Beyer Speed Figure, equaling his career high, for his length victory in Saturday’s $60,000 King Cotton Stakes for older sprinters. Trainer Chris Richard said the gelding came out of the race in good shape and will be pointed for the $75,000 Hot Springs Stakes on March 23. … Najjaar worked 5 furlongs Sunday morning but no time was recorded because of heavy fog.

Trainer Dan Peitz said he was happy with the work and the colt is about three weeks away from his 4-year-old debut. … Trainer Mac Robertson said Win Willy will run in Saturday’s $100,000 Essex Handicap for older horses. Win Willy was assigned 118 pounds for the race. Also pointing for the Essex is Skyring, who was assigned 116.
