Autism will be the subject of Read This!, a community reading project that kicks off today at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.

The book chosen for Read This! is Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the story of a 15-year-old boy with an autism spectrum condition. A book launch is planned at noon Jan. 28 in the Reynolds Room at the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center.

Temple Grandin, a woman who overcame the challenges of autism to become a top livestock scientist, will be the keynote speaker for the event. Temple Grandin, an HBO movie of her life, will be screened March 24 in the Reynolds Room.

Grandin will speak at 5:30 p.m. March 11 at the Stubblefield Center. A book signing will follow.

It’s Great to Skate, an annual ice skating clinic, is set for 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the Jones Center in Springdale.

Participants will learn the basics of ice skating from professional instructors. Young and old are invited to attend.

The event will include a free skating class, exhibitions, a resale shop, an auction and goodies. The event is sponsored by the Ozark Figure Skating Club and U.S. Figure Skating.

The third annual Walton Arts Center Masquerade Ball will be 7-11 p.m. Saturday at the arts center in Fayetteville.

The Mardi Gras-themed event will benefit arts education programs.

Cafe Rue Orleans and Ella’s will serve up New Orleansstyle food. An open bar and dessert specialty bar are also planned.

Lagniappe with Genine “Miss Poetry” Perez, guitar virtuoso Ben Harris, Jay Gentry on bass and drummer Dave Hoffpauir is scheduled to perform. Vaudeville act Kamikaze Fireflies will offer up a juggling, comedic, acrobatic and fire-breathing spectacle.

Last year’s ball raised $65,000 for programs like the Colgate Classroom Series and the Arkansas history play Digging Up Arkansas. Organizers hope to raise $100,000 this year.
