— FOOTBALL Caldwell joins ASU staff

Arkansas State announced Friday it has hired former Arkansas assistant Steve Caldwell as its defensive line coach.

Caldwell, a former defensive lineman and assistant coach at ASU, is the eighth assistant hired by new Red Wolves Coach Bryan Harsin. Caldwell spent the past three seasons as defensive line coach and special teams coordinator at Arkansas. Before that, he spent 14 seasons at Tennessee.

“Obviously, it’s always a great addition to your staff any time you can get a coach the caliber of Steve Caldwell with his successful bowl, coaching and recruiting experience,” Harsin said through a university release. “He has a great history with our university and knows the state and region very well.”

Caldwell coached at Tennessee from 1995 to 2008, a tenure that included the Volunteers’ BCS national championship in 1998.

He was a defensive end and linebacker for Arkansas State in 1974-1977, when ASU went 30-13 and finished 11-0 in 1975. He was a graduate assistant there in 1978 and 197 and served as ASU’s linebackers coach in 1985-1987.

GYMNASTICS Arkansas knocks off Denver

Junior All-American Katherine Grable and freshman Erin Freier claimed event titles Friday night as the Arkansas gymnastics team upset No. 11 Denver 195.475 to 195.125 at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville.

Grable stuck her vault landing for a 9.875 to win that event and finished first on the floor with a 9.875. Grable also won the all-around title for the Razorbacks (1-2-0) with a score of 39.350, followed by fellow All-American Amy Borsellino (39.200).

“We had some excellent performances on beam tonight,” Arkansas co-Coach Rene Lyst said. “The biggest thing is we gained some confidence, especially with our freshmen tonight, to help us move forward throughout the season.”

Denver fell to 3-2-0 this season.
