Bentonville School Board President Travis Riggs resigns

— Bentonville School Board President Travis Riggs has announced his resignation from the board. His last meeting will be in February.

Riggs resigned on Thursday evening following a vote by the school board to move all its committee meetings from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Riggs said the additional night meetings on top of what he already attends will take too much time away from his family. He has served on the board for 12 years.

The board has four committee meetings including its regular evening school board meeting. It has been the board's practice to add an additional committee meeting to the lineup when the district is in the midst of planning a construction project. The board also holds four evening board retreats a year. It also is common for the board to hold special meetings.

The board changed the times of the committee meetings following advice from its attorney, Marshall Ney, Riggs said. He said a state law requires that meetings be after 5 p.m. The board was previously unaware that the law included committee meetings, Riggs said.

Typically two or three board members attend committee meetings. The committee does not take action on items but makes recommendations to the board.
