Ozark Regional Transit ending Saturday service

Ozark Regional Transit will end Saturday service after Feb. 16, the organization's board decided Thursday.

On a normal weekday, a rider on the public transit system costs $3.83 per trip, according to figures presented to the board Thursday.

Lower traffic on Saturdays meant the average cost per rider was closer to $19 per trip.

"I know some people will be upset about it, but it's for the benefit of the system," said Joel Gardner, the service's general manager.

The program of Saturday rides began in 2009 with money from the federal economic stimulus program.

"That money is long gone," Gardner said.
