Classes, show part of TrumpetFEST

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith is inviting all high school and college trumpet players to participate in this year’s TrumpetFEST, set for Friday at the university.

The event will include an afternoon of classes and rehearsal from 4-7 p.m., followed by a free concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center.

Band directors are also invited to the event. There is no fee to participate and no registration deadline.

Writers’ Colony hosts Fantasy Fest

The Crescent Hotel and the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs are partnering for the Otherworlds Fantasy Fest Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The festival is a fundraiser for the Writers’ Colony.

The festival is designed for the general public and for writers who want to learn how to write fantasy, horror or graphic novels. The workshop will feature New York agent Cherry Weiner; Lou Turner, owner of High Press and Publishing; and nationally recognized science-fiction writers Gini Koch and Ruth Weeks.

Other authors in attendance include Kevin Brown of Fayetteville; graphic novelist Sean Fitzgibbons; 10-year-old author Lincoln J. Wear of Tulsa; 16-year-old Lexi Brady, author of Death’s Apprentice: Death of Dreams; and local favorites Alison-Taylor Brown and Keith Scales.

Conference sessions will be held at the Crescent Hotel Conservatory, while a writers’ workshop will be held at the Writers’ Colony.
