Adam Irons of Bentonville, a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., was a member of the marathon team which ran the ceremonial game ball to Philadelphia for the 113th Army-Navy football classic Dec. 8. The 19-member cadet team accepted the ball Dec. 6 to run approximately 150 miles to Lincoln Financial Field in Pennsylvania.

Seven area residents enlisted recently in the Arkansas Army National Guard and will complete basic training followed by individual assignments.

Pvt. Steven Cornell of Springdale will serve with the 216th Military Police Company in North Little Rock.

Pvt. David Hammons of Bentonville will serve with Detachment 1, Alpha Company 1st Battalion 153rd Infantry in Arkadelphia.

Pvt. Cameron Mullins of Centerton will serve with the 296th Medical Company in Hot Springs.

Pvt. Blakemore Owens of Fayetteville will serve with the 937th Forward Support Company in Barling.

Pvt. Dallas Schnedler of Centerton will serve with Headquarters Battery 2nd Battalion 142nd Field Artillery in Barling.

Pvt. Geovanni Stoppel of Rogers will serve with the 936th Support Company in Berryville.

Pvt. Deshun Thomas of Fayetteville will serve with the 142nd Signal Network Support Company in Springdale.

Pvt. Nathan Adams of Prairie Grove will attend advanced individual skill training, then return to Arkansas to serve with Bravo Battery 1st Battalion 206thField Artillery Brigade in Dardanelle.

Pfc. Tyler Barnes of Fayetteville will attend Health Care School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The son of Lisa and Rollin Barnes will serve with the 296th Medical Company in Hot Springs.

Pvt. Justin Christensen of Bentonville will complete advanced individual skill training, then serve with Bravo Company 217th Brigade Support Battalion in Rogers.

Pfc. Patrick Claggett of Lowell will attend advanced individual skill training, then serve with Headquarters Company 39th Brigade Troops Battalion in Conway.

Pvt. Zachary Davis of Bentonville will complete advanced individual skill training, then serve with Detachment 1 Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion 153rd Infantry Brigade in Wynne.

Pfc. Chloe Farley of Fayetteville will attend Human Resources School at Fort Jackson, S.C. The daughter of Sheila and Timothy Farley will serve with Headquarters Company 217th Brigade Support Battalion in Booneville.

Pvt. Joshua Richardson of Bentonville will attend advanced individual skill training, then serve with the 937th Forward Support Company in Barling.

Sgt. James Rudolph of Springdale will attend automated logistical training at Fort Lee, Va., then serve with Alpha Company 217th Brigade Support Battalion in Lincoln.

Pvt. Kelsey Schacherbauer of Springdale will attend advanced individual skill training before she returns to Arkansas to serve with the 936th Support Company in Berryville.

Pfc. James Simpson of Fayetteville will attend advanced individual skill training before returning to Arkansas to serve with Delta Company 1st Battalion 153rd Infantry Brigade in Sheridan.

Pvt. Anthony Taylor of Summers will attend Power Generation Equipment Repair Training at Fort Lee, Va., then serve with Foxtrot Battery 142nd Delta Fires Brigade in Fayetteville.

Five scholarship awards of $500 each were given by the Northwest Arkansas Military Officers Group, which is the Fayetteville chapter of the Military Officers of America Association. The scholarship selection committee of retired U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force Lt. Cols. Jack King and Jim Hess received 43 applications in 2012, making these five awards to four military veterans and the widow of a veteran:

Carolyn Hollingsworth and Martha Zepeda, both of Springdale; Khanh Nguyen of Fayetteville; Leslie McGaugh of Elkins and Shayla and Thomas Bonner of Fayetteville, shared by husband and wife.

The program started in 2009 with one scholarship and grows through contributions from the group’s members.

Veterans and their dependents were offered the opportunity to take a free class in the AARP Driver Safety Program during the month of November. Of the 400 participants in Benton and Washington counties during November, 290 qualified for a free class under the program.

Anyone 55 or older who takes a class is assured of a discount on automobile insurance for three years, according to Arkansas State law. On average, each individual will save $120 over the next three years on automobile insurance.

The usual class fee charged is $14, with AARP members charged $12. Scheduled classes are listed at aarp/drive.
