— Prairie Grove didn’t need a huge comeback to beat Lincoln in Tuesday’s rematch.

The Lady Tigers dominated from the start and defeated the Lady Wolves 56-42 in a 4A-1 Conference game at the Tigers Gym. Justyne Huber scored 23 points and Lacey Beeks 17 to lead Prairie Grove, which led 30-13 at halftime and 40-20 after three quarters.

The game was quite a contrast from the teams’ first meeting at Lincoln, when the Lady Tigers rallied from a 19-7 deficit at halftime to win 39-37. Prairie Grove began its comeback in that game by outscoring Lincoln 16-0 in the third quarter.

Lincoln twice got to within 11 points in the fourth quarter but the Lady Wolves could not overcome their poor start in the first half. Hayle Sugg finished with 16 points to lead Lincoln.

“We wanted to play better than the way we started the first time (against Lincoln) and I thought we did that,” Prairie Grove coach Kevin Froud said. “We missed some shots in the fourth quarter, but I thought we did some things and showed some maturity to win the game.”

Prairie Grove (16-4, 9-0) did not trail in Tuesday’s rematch after Huber, Macie Kultgen, and Whitnee Fitts opened the game with 3-pointers from different areas of the court. Huber, a 6-foot-0 center, got the Lady Tigers started with a 3-pointer from the right wing. Kultgen followed with a 3-pointer from the left wing Fitts finished the spree with a 3 from the left corner.

That long-ranged shooting forced Lincoln (15-6, 6-3) to closely guard the perimeter and Kultgen and Huber each scored two inside baskets to give Prairie Grove a 19-5 lead after one quarter. Lincoln managed eight points in the second quarter and did not make a field goal until Sugg muscled up a shot with 2:47 left before halftime.

“We did start out right against a great team and dug ourselves a hole,” Lincoln coach Deon Birkes said. “We weren’t focused.”

Lincoln played its best in the fourth quarter when the Lady Wolves outscored Prairie Grove 22-13. Lincoln twice got to within 11 points but Lacey Beeks countered both times with baskets to keep the Lady Tigers ahead. Lincoln’s chance of a comeback faded after Sugg and Shelby Rowe each fouled out in the fourth quarter.

“Beeks is stepping up and coming into her role,” Froud said. “She’s a good defensive player and she’s getting better on the offensive end.”
