Hanson sinks Southside

— Olivia Hanson provided more than just her game-high 20 points Tuesday night for Fort Smith Northside.

Hanson secured a couple of critical steals to go along with all that offense and help the Lady Bears slip past Fort Smith Southside 46-32 at the Stubblefield Center.

“She not only hit big shots but got some steals,” Fort Smith Northside Coach Rickey Smith said. “Those steals on the press we had to have and they broke the game open.”

After leading 17-12 at halftime, Hanson helped spark a 7-0 run to end the third quarter as Northside (18-2, 5-1 7A/6A-Central) took a 31-18 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Drew Jones, who scored a team-high 16 points, helped Southside (14-5, 3-3) keep it close until the Lady Bears made their big run at the end of the third behind some tough defense and Hanson’s hot hand. Hanson finished with four three-pointers.

“They caused us a lot of problems,” Smith said of Southside’s defense. “We didn’t show a lot of life. We were up by 14 points and we should be more excited.”

Northside continued to add to the lead in the fourth quarter, with Hanson scoring 10 points. Northside closed out the game by outscoring Southside 10-4.

Bria Caldwell added 12 points for Northside, while Brianna Jackson had seven and Kilah Cummings finished with six.

Drew Jones got it going early and scored six of Southside’s eight points in the quarter as Southside trailed just17-12 going into halftime.

“It was just an emotional game and we played flat,” Smith said. “We had a burst there when we scored some points, but we didn’t look very aggressive on offense.
