The bill introduced by M.B. Lefler of Van Buren county prohibiting fishing on Sunday likely will be deeply resented by those carrot-topped youths of Arkansas who are wont during spring time to “cut” Sunday school and hide away to the “crick” to angle for perch. If the bill becomes a law, no more will the truant business man be seen coming back into Little Rock about nightfall with a $50 fishing outfit and one lone sucker in his basket. Mr. Lefler said yesterday that it is unlawful to hunt game on Sunday, and it should be just as unlawful for men to congregate on the banks of sylvan streams and angle for trout.

50 YEARS AGO Jan. 22, 1963

NASHVILLE, Ark. - A gas regulator failed and left this southwest Arkansas town of 3,500 without heat in the face of a cold wave today. Temperatures were expected to dip into the 20s tonight and the Arkansas Louisiana Gas Co. said all service would not be restored until midnight. Public schools closed and businesses and industries requiring gas for operation shut down for the day.

25 YEARS AGO Jan. 22, 1988

State campaign officials of the George Bush for President Committee said Thursday the Bush campaign will boycott the “Super Saturday” rally in Little Rock this weekend. The decision to boycott the event drew immediate criticism from state Republican Party officials and other GOP campaign officials. Super Saturday, sponsored by the state Republican Party is a prelude to the March 8 Super Tuesday primary. The event will decide the straw poll - which some GOP officials cited as the probable reason for the Bush boycott.

10 YEARS AGO Jan. 22, 2003

A policy banning off duty police from carrying handguns inside Alltel Arena is under fire from local officers who say they’ll boycott arena events rather than part with their weapons. Ten deputies with the Pulaski County sheriff’s office resigned from their part-time security jobs at the arena this week in protest of the gun ban.
