Fuel spill leads to arrests

Washington County deputies arrested two people in connection with a fuel spill Tuesday morning on Arkansas 16.

Anthony Steven Stobaugh, 22, of 5404 W. Magnolia St. in Rogers and Daisy Lynn Bohannan, 23, of 20558 Springston Ford Road in Elkins face a felony charge in connection with theft of property, along with misdemeanor criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

Elkins Fire Chief J.D. DeMotte said firefighters responded to a fuel spill in front of 11694 Arkansas 16 South at 4:18 a.m.

“There was a trailer with a 300-gallon tank of diesel fuel that had been taken from a nearby farm,” he said. “It came detached from the truck that was pulling it and the trailer went off the roadway, overturned and ruptured the fuel tank.”

Police blocked westbound traffic for three or four hours, he said, while Fayetteville hazardous material crews cleaned up the fuel.

“We dammed it up on each end to keep the fuel from going any further and rolled the tank up to keep it from leaking” DeMotte said.

According to an arrest report, the trailer was reported stolen from a farm just south of Durham at 3:35 a.m. A driver for Terra Renewal Services told deputies it was stolen from the farm where they had been working, which is between Durham and Shumate Cemetery Road.

Deputies located a truck on Springston Ford Road that matched the description of the vehicle that stole the trailer, the report said.

Bohannan reportedly said she had nothing to do with the stolen trailer. She identified Stobaugh as the driver of the truck, the report said. Bohannan said they had been together all night at her residence.

Deputies found shoe wear and tire impression marks at the farm that matched Stobaugh’s shoes and truck, along with other evidence, according to the report.

Bohannan and Stobaugh were arrested and taken to the Washington County Detention Center. They hadn’t been booked as of noon Tuesday.
