Copper Theft Leads to Meth Arrests

Lincoln police went to arrest two men Sunday on suspicion of stealing brass and copper fittings from the city’s water treatment plant and ended up making other drug arrests.

Officers apprehended David Ely, 28, of 19905 Kirklane Road and Gary Medlin, 32, of 10395 S. Jackson Highway in connection with the theft, according to a probable cause statement from the Washington County Prosecutor’s office.

While at Ely’s residence, officers found chemicals and equipment used to manufacture methamphetamine in a chicken house.

Ely was arrested in connection with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture.

Paul Metcalf, 24, of 513 S. Main Ave. was arrested in connection with felony possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Metcalf was later charged with felony terroristic threatening. He was suspected of sending a threatening text message to a Lincoln woman.

According to the probable cause statement, the text message read, “If u sent tha cops here ur dead.”

Medlin was released Sunday from the Washington County Detention Center.

Ely and Metcalf were being held on $2,500 and $3,500 bond.
