— Gov. Mike Beebe and the Arkansas Department of Human Services recognized Fayetteville as a Volunteer Community of the Year last week for the fourth consecutive year.

Mayor Lioneld Jordan and city officials accepted the award during the Arkansas Municipal League’s winter conference.

According to a city news release, more than 30,000 Fayetteville volunteers logged more than 557,000 hours of community service in 2012.

Residents volunteered on a number of city boards and commissions; participated in stream bank cleanups organized by the Illinois River; taught children theater through Arts Live Theatre; provided medical care through Life Styles, Washington Regional Medical Center’s Cancer Support Home and the Northwest Arkansas Free Health Center; organized festivals, such as the Block Street Block Party; and coached youth sports.

“We are a giving community, and this award is in honor of the tens of thousands of Fayetteville volunteers who have done so much to help so many,” Jordan said in the news release. “I thank the people of Fayetteville for all the time they dedicated to the community through their volunteer service.”
