— 100 YEARS AGO Jan. 21, 1913

Because of the prevalence of smallpox in Maumelle township, the special election for constable in that township and Eagle township, which had been set for February 1, has been indefinitely postponed. Yesterday County Judge Joe Asher issued an order postponing the election and Sheriff W.G. Hutton sent the notice to the people of both towns. It was feared that bringing together the voters at the polls might result in spreading the disease.

50 YEARS AGO Jan. 21, 1963

The Senate today passed a concurrent resolution expressing its appreciation and gratitude to Ray Winder and the board of directors of the Arkansas Travelers Baseball Club Inc. for their success in entering the club in the AAA International Baseball League. The resolution, introduced by Sen. E. L. (Van) Mosley of Camden, was adopted by voice vote.

25 YEARS AGO Jan. 21, 1988

Court rulings have resulted in more money being spent on a convicted felon in prison than a veteran in a veterans hospital, U.S. Rep Tommy Robinson, D-Ark., said Wednesday. Robinson, who represents the 2nd Congressional District and is a former Pulaski County sheriff made his remarks at an Arkansas Sheriff’s Association winter conference luncheon. Robinson said he planned to introduce a bill that would use past U.S. Supreme Court decisions to put the burden of proving Eighth Amendment unconstitutionality of prison overcrowding on the prisoner rather than the prison administration.

Tyson Foods Inc. is expanding from its traditional chicken business, launching new lines of beef and pork under its own name and featuring its new muscle as the world’s largest meat company. The effort will include $40 million in advertising and $60 million in additional efforts ranging from store promotions to ads targeting ethnic groups as Tyson adds products through the year. The $100 million includes marketing for chicken products.
