Last Farm Pesticide Class Set

— The application of restricted-use pesticides, tools commonly used for controlling certain weeds, brush, insects and other pests, requires farmers obtain certification through programs sanctioned by the Arkansas State Plant Board.

A class will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Public Services Building auditorium on Southwest 14th Street in Bentonville. An RSVP is required by calling 479-271-1060 or emailing [email protected] by Wednesday.

“This private applicator training class, conducted in cooperation with the ASPB, is the last one to be held this season. Our November and December 2012 classes maxed out and producers not able to make those needed another opportunity,” Robert Seay, Benton County extension agent, said in a news release.

Because of the loss of Environmental Protection Agency money, the Cooperative Extension Service now charges for the certification training required for a private applicator pesticide license. The $10 fee, which began in fall 2004, will not affect the license fee required by the Arkansas State Plant Board, according to a news release.

“This class is for crop and livestock producers only, regardless of farm size,” Seay said. “I’ve certified producers who have only one acre and producers who have a thousand acres.”
