Hall unable to keep pace with top team

— Little Rock Hall put up a strong effort in the first half, but the Warriors eventually fell to No. 1-ranked Montverde (Fla.) Academy 60-45 in the first round of the Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions on Thursday night.

Hall (11-4) was tied with the unbeaten Eagles at 9-9 after the first quarter and went into halftime trailing 24-20. Montverde, however, outscored the Warriors 16-6 in the third quarter to take control.

Arkansas signee Bobby Portis led the Warriors with 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Senior Roy Owens led the Warriors with seven rebounds. Senior guard Javon Perry added 12 points.

Montverde (17-0) was led by Dakari Johnson’s 15 points and seven rebounds. Johnson, a 6-10 senior center who has signed with Kentucky, was 7 of 11 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds.

Montverde has six Division I recruits on its roster and is the top-ranked boys high school team in the nation, according to ESPN and MaxPreps.

Hall will play Bullitt East of Mount Washington, Ky., in today’s consolation round.

BENTON 51, TEXARKANA 23 Josh Bowling scored 18 points and the Panthers (15-2, 4-0) jumped out to a 20-6 lead after the first quarter on their way to a 7A/6A-South victory over the Razorbacks (10-9, 2-2) in Benton. Graham Gardner added 10 points for Benton, which led 35-11 at the half.

CARLISLE 66, DES ARC 64 Behind 14 points from Chris Edwards, the Bison (7-5, 5-4) held on for a 6-2A victory over the Eagles in Carlisle. Dathan Hill added 13, Austin Reed 12 and Chris Hart 10 for Carlisle. Dynarian Spencer’s 25 points led Des Arc.

CLARENDON 49, HUGHES 44 Steve Tyler led the Lions (12-1, 7-1) with 11 points in a 6-2A victory over the host Blue Devils. Styleen Tyler added 10 points for Clarendon.

McGEHEE 47, DREW CENTRAL 46 Marcus Miller led the Owls with 13 points in an 8-3A victory over the Pirates in Monticello. Zach Ellis added 11 points for McGehee, which hit a last-second shot to secure the victory. Damarius Thomas’ 24 points led Drew Central.

WONDERVIEW 52, NEMO VISTA 30 John Beck scored 12 points and the Daredevils outscored the Redhawks 36-16 in the second half for a 5-1A victory. Sean Eastman added 11 and Hunter Gunderman 10 for Wonderview (18-6, 9-3). Shelby Lewis led Nemo Vista with 15 points.

GIRLS

BENTON 55, TEXARKANA 27 Allison Reynolds and Braxton Chumley each scored 10 points as the Lady Panthers (13-4, 4-0) rolled to a 7A/6A-South victory over the Lady Razorbacks (10-8, 0-4).

BUFFALO ISLAND CENTRAL 49, EAST POINSETT COUNTY 42 Brittany Fowler led the Lady Mustangs (27-3, 12-1) with 22 points in a 3-2A victory over the Lady Warriors (8-9, 7-6). Emily Owens added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Buffalo Island Central. Alicia Ross scored 21 to lead EPC while Teria Young added 13. CARLISLE 62, DES ARC 36 Faith Walker led the Lady Bison (10-7, 7-2) with 15 points in a 6-2A victory over the Lady Eagles in Carlisle. Presley Carter added 14 and Sloane Henderson 10 for Carlisle. Ashley Martin’s 21 points led Des Arc.

DREW CENTRAL 40, McGEHEE 31 Aaliyah Black’s 15 points helped the Lady Pirates (15-7, 2-0) take an 8-3A victory over the Lady Owls. Cierra Gardner added 12 for Drew Central, which led 24-17 at the half.

MARMADUKE 80, MARKED TREE 38 Whitley Boggs scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds and the Lady Greyhounds (28-2, 13-0) overcame an early 10-point deficit to rout the Lady Indians (18-4, 10-3) in a 3-2A game in Marmaduke. Sidnee Bopp also scored 19 points for Marmaduke, which trailed 14-4 four minutes into the game. Jessica Lee added 10 points and seven rebounds and Alexis Jones led Marmaduke with eight assists. Jay Perry scored 19 points to lead Marked Tree while Poonu Perry added 11.

VALLEY VIEW 63, POCAHONTAS 32 Blaire Parrish scored 16 points and made four steals as the Lady Blazers (17-2, 9-0) rolled to a 3-4A victory over the Lady Redskins in Jonesboro. Ashleigh Guthrie added 14 points and grabbed five rebounds for Valley View. Laura Junkersfield led Pocahontas with six points.
