10 YEARS AGO Jan. 17, 2003 WASHINGTON - About 14 U.S. senators, including both senators from Arkansas, are trying to come up with an alternative to the tax cuts proposed by President Bush. The two Arkansas senators, both Democrats, said Thursday that they expect that the alternative would reduce the size of the package, starting with Bush’s proposal to end the tax on corporate dividends. “I just think the president’s plan is not truly a stimulus plan. It’s more of a long-term tax proposal,” said Sen. Mark Pryor. “Unfortunately, it will greatly increase the deficit. I guess I would call myself a deficit hawk. I want to get our deficit under control and get our debt eradicated.”
