Lakeside slowed, but not stopped

— Overcoming White Hall’s slow-down tactics, Hot Springs Lakeside sped up the tempo enough in the second and third quarters for a 17-point lead en route to a 42-28 5A-South Conference victory Wednesday night.

The Rams (13-4) remained unbeaten in four league games, even though they were limited to 17 shots in the first half as White Hall (3-11, 0-4) spread the court. The tactic helped the Bulldogs stay within 6-4 in the first quarter and 16-9 going into halftime. Lakeside scored seven of the second quarter’s first nine points on DJ McAfee’s power move, Blevins’ dunk off Nicky Jones’ pass, and Chris Aings’ fast-break layup and free throw.

“They’re as athletic as anybody we’ve played in conference so far,” Lakeside Coach Tommy White said. “We expected them to press. We really didn’t expect them to hold the ball, but when they’ve scored in the 60s they’ve lost [to Magnolia and Hot Springs]. That was the best thing they could do to win.”

The Rams scored nine of the first 11 points of the third quarter with Ray Beresford’s layup off a steal making it 25-10. Beresford made a threepointer for a 28-12 lead, and Trey Hendrix’s layup off Aings’ long pass pushed the margin to 30-12.

“It makes a big difference when you put pressure on people defensively and you hit shots,” White said.

The lead reached 37-15 on layups by McAfee and Beresford before the teams emptied their benches.

Blevins, adding a fourthquarter dunk, led Lakeside with 11 points and a gamehigh 11 rebounds. Aings had 10 points, and Beresfordhad eight points and four rebounds. McAfee blocked three shots.
