Fayetteville Wins Berryville Tournament

Fayetteville may have been working with a depleted lineup last weekend, but the Purple Bulldogs still were able to edge Rogers High and Rogers Heritage to claim the Berryville Invitational tournament.

Senior Austin Hubble earned Fayetteville’s fourth first-place finish of the day, winning the heavyweight division to help the Purple Bulldogs win with 148 points, followed by Rogers High at 146 and Heritage 145.

Hubble is the defending 6A/7A state champion at 220 pounds.

Alex Baysinger (126), Sam Goll (170) and Rodney Ensley (126) also won their respective weight classes.

“We wrestled pretty well,” Fayetteville coach Steve Adair said. “But we had four starters out with the flu. We hope we can get everybody healthy in a couple of weeks.”

Mounties Take Second

Rogers wrestling coach Ken Simmons said his team didn’t perform as well as it had in some recent tournaments, but still had some strong performances.

The Mounties had four champions at Berryville. Nick Mulcahy (29-0) remained undefeated this season by winning at 152 pounds, while Edwin Santos (182) also won and improved to 26-1.

Madison Montgomery (22-8) and Justin Moore (24-4) also won at 132 and 145, respectively. Heath Henman (138) took second. Third-place finishers for Rogers were Josh Lee (170) and Juan Balderas at 195.

Tigers Finish Third at Berryville

Bentonville took a lineup of junior varsity wrestlers to Berryville, but still managed a fourth-place finish over the weekend.

Derian Fernandez was the only Bentonville champion at 106, while Ryan Flynn (126), Curtis Brumfield (132) and Ryan Grimes (152) each finished second. Kiaran Curtis (113), Tony Ellis (120) and Drew Schuler (160) took third.

War Eagles Win Three Weight Classes

Rogers Heritage came up a few points short of a tournament title at Berryville, but coach Doug Freman said his team can definitely wrestle better.

“We were up and down overall,” Freeman said. “We competed well and had some guys wrestle well, but we had some guys who didn’t medal who I believe could have. But I think every coach could say the same thing.”

Logan Evans, the defending 6A-7A state champion at 138 pounds won his weight class, as did Gaven Long (113) and Ramsey Gonzalez (160). Cole Penny (195), Damian Gonzalez (182) and Caleb Royal (120) each took second, while Colten Stewart (152) was third.

“We’re definitely better than we were at the start of the season, but there’s still a lot of stuff where I see room for improvement,” Freeman said.
